The first screen is a Google map. You can move around this map, and zoom in and out using the tools in the top left hand corner of the map.
Click on the Add Plant button. A red icon will appear on the map. Click on the icon, and hold the mouse down to move the plant to your preferred location on the map.
Input the size of your plant in acres via the area input box on the right hand side of the screen.
Note how the circle underneath the red plant icon increases in size, the greater the number of acres entered.
You can also add more than one plant to a scenario using the Add Plant button on the right hand side of the screen. The results provided for a multiple plant scenario are for all plants combined.
To delete a plant from a scenario, click on the X next to the plant name on the right hand side of the screen.
Type in the name of your plant in the Custom text box.
Select the solar technology (PV or CSP) and year of installation using the drop-down menus directly above the map.
Also enter the nameplate capacity.
The Az SMART tool has a number of pre-defined system options. These can be accessed by clicking on the Settings button. To amend one or more default settings, which relate to capital cost assumptions, general cost assumptions, transmission options, marketing options or technology options, click on the Settings button and amend accordingly. To run the scenario using the default settings, skip this step.
After inputting your plant and solar settings, click Run Scenario.
The tool’s processing time is approximately 30 seconds.
Once the processing is completed, you can view 6 result screens.
The default result screen is the map. This shows the plant’s location and closest transmission line (in blue). The closest urban area is also stated to the right of the screen.
Click on the Total Levelized Cost button to compare the capital, operations and maintenance (O&M), fuel, transmission and distribution (T&D), intermittency, and carbon costs of your solar plant compared to other forms of electricity generation.
Click on the Through Time Levelized Cost button to view estimates for up to 20 types of renewable and non-renewable energy technology. All 20 types are listed in a legend to the right of the chart. Click on a greyed-out technology to add it to your chart. To remove a technology displayed on the chart, simply click on its entry in the legend to grey it out.
Click on the Total Construction Impacts button to view the gross direct, indirect and induced job impacts expressed in job years and gross state product (GSP) impacts associated with the construction of your solar plant. Please note: this is a gross figure which does not take into account any impacts associated with the displacement or cessation of other technologies.
Click on the Annual O&M Impacts button to view the gross direct, indirect and induced job impacts expressed in job years and gross state product (GSP) annual impacts associated with the operations and maintenance (O&M) of your solar plant. Please note: this is also a gross figure which does not take into account any impacts associated with the displacement or cessation of other technologies.
Click on the Environment button to view the annual emissions saved, and percent change in water withdrawal and consumption associated with your solar technology, compared to an alternative scenario using natural gas to obtain the same level of generation.
To return to the map screen at any time, simply click on the Map button.
You can also scroll through the results charts by using the left and right arrow buttons either side of a displayed chart.
To revisit and/or edit the input elements of your scenario, click on the Edit Scenario button.
Each scenario is given a unique URL to enable you to return to the scenario at a later date or share with a colleague.
To use this facility click on the Share Scenario button on the scenario results page.
